Rebecca Nell Kaufman

Ms. Kaufman is a senior associate focusing on First Amendment rights, media law, product disparagement, publicity and privacy rights, and crisis management. She also has extensive experience as a business litigator. Since joining Glassman Browning, Saltsman & Jacobs, Inc., Ms. Kaufman successfully litigated claims against ABC on behalf of the Rev. Frederick K.C. Price that resulted in ABC's apologizing to Dr. Price. Ms. Kaufman regularly advises and advocates for the Church of Scientology, a target of persistent media attacks. She also specializes in protecting the reputation of for-profit and non-profit corporations and their products or services, including Skechers, DynCorp International, Prime Healthcare, and Feed The Children. Ms. Kaufman further spends significant time advising and advocating for public and private figures whose reputations have been unfairly compromised on the internet.

Before Ms. Kaufman joined the firm, she was a senior associate at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP from 1998-2010. She litigated cases involving numerous industries, including banking, insurance, construction, real estate, technology, and industrial manufacturing. Ms. Kaufman's cases ranged in issues from commercial contracts, fraudulent transfer, bond default, insolvency, securities law, product liability, government contracts, environmental, insurance, intellectual property, and real property. Ms. Kaufman worked for several years defending a national bank in a complex securities fraud class action resulting in a highly favorable settlement.

Representing institutional plaintiffs, Ms. Kaufman served as lead associate in a fraudulent transfer lawsuit before the United States District Court and Bankruptcy Court that led to a $17 million settlement recovery. She also has extensive experience defending asbestos and silica claims-Ms. Kaufman successfully defended over 40 asbestos and silica cases in northern and southern California on behalf of manufacturers of industrial tools and equipment. She also has experience conducting internal investigations. For example, she investigated whistleblower and criminal claims for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

In addition to Ms. Kaufman's institutional and public-figure clients, Ms. Kaufman has represented impoverished clients on a pro bono basis, including those seeking political asylum and two California death row inmates challenging their capital sentences.
